Whoa, where did my Sunday go?! Such is the joy of crossing the international date line. When we landed it was already Monday morning.
As we approached our rental car I was visibly concerned: that's what you rented?! Shira had arranged for us to have a gigantic Toyota Highlander for the week. Wouldn't you prefer to navigate left-hand-side driving in a more compact vehicle? Shira was undeterred. She knew we were going to be spending hours in the car, covering nearly the entire North Island of New Zealand. For this, having space for us and our stuff to spread out would be ideal.
I love how the car's control panel had not one, but two yellow "Keep Left" stickers plastered on it. As if one sticker wasn't going to be enough to keep Americans from driving into the right lane, but two would do the job. As we drove to our hotel, I kept asking Shira: "are you OK?" Which of course was my way of saying that I'm most certainly not OK. But Shira took the left hand driving like a champ. While I held on for dear life, Shira drove like she was in any other foreign city; cautiously but with confidence.
We checked into our hotel and then headed out to the streets of Auckland to check it out. What we found was a delightful city in the midst of a perfectly sunny summer day. We took in the usual sights: a walk to the waterfront, a trip up to the top of the Sky Tower and a walk through the War Memorial Museum. By the end of the day I was a jet-lagged zombie, but a happy zombie at that.
