Last week, Shira and I did a nice long bike ride from our house to the Anacostia River Trail. While riding along, I couldn't help but wonder what trip I could drag Shira along if we had time for an overnight?
Here are some ideas Googling turned up...
- The C & O canal trail is an obvious choice. It starts in DC and heads out 184 miles. Apparently their are campsites around 40 miles in. Even simpler still, you can rent space in an authentic Lock House along the way, and skimp on some gear.
- Adventure Cycling Association provides touring routes all over the US, like say the 4000+ mile TransAmerica trail. Of special note is the Tidewater Potomac Trail, which starts in DC and is 378 miles. Yeah, a bit more than an overnight, but still an excellent resource for finding a route.
- Prince William Forest Park is, according to Google, a 35 mile bike ride away and offers camping. It may be a stretch, but seems like it would work for an over-nighter.
- The Potomic Heritage National Scenic Trail corridor has quite a bit of information about bike rides in the area. I haven't sifted through them all yet, but there may be some good options there.
Between the weather, our schedule and other factors, we're almost certainly not taking one of these adventures any time soon. Still, I'm always a fan of having plans at the ready so I can nudge Shira into taking them at a moment's notice.
Or as I like to say, I never want to miss an opportunity to over do it.
Have any S240O ideas for the DC region? I'd love to hear them.
