CNN Gets Into The T-shirt Business

The other day, David pointed out a little t-shirt icon that were next to top stories on cnn.com. Clicking the icon takes you to a page where you can buy that headline on a T-shirt. For example:

OK, I'll be the first to admit that I don't exactly get what they are doing here. But, I like it. I like it, because it's a novel approach to making revenue and getting your name out that isn't the same old advertising scheme. As services like cafepress.com have show, on the fly creation of goods are accessible to all.

Just think if one of these headlines were to go viral and be the next Internet sensation? They'd be all cued up to cash in on it.

Nice out of the box thinking. I give them an A for effort.

  1. I like that cnn.com (probably the most visited website in my daily surfing routine) is thinking outside the box, but I don't like what they're thinking about. I think these shirts are pretty hideous and I would never pay money for a shirt with an arbitrary headline printed on it. I seriously doubt I'll be seeing these on the metro anytime soon and I'm interested in reading about the sales figures generated from this effort. I can't believe they'll be selling these like hotcakes.

    Jordan,

I think you're probably right with the idea that these particular T-shirts might not sell. But I think they're just a first version, a dry run if you think about it. CNN and other news organizations are big on reader response that I'm sure they'll get plenty of comments on how to make the shirts better. I'm not a business guy, but getting feedback on a product that basically costs the company nothing, allowing it to make the product more profitable is pretty awesome.
