Last night Shira and I saw The Simpsons movie. I have to say, I wasn't that impressed. OK, it got me laughing a few times, and after sleeping on it, I've decided I liked the storyline.
Unfortunately, it just didn't compare to Simpsons during their hayday.
If you aren't a big Simpsons fan, I'd save my money on this movie and invest it in some DVD's of the classic seasons. (Anyone want to say in the comments what seasons are the classic ones?)
Still, it had enough jokes in it that I was still chuckling this morning, so it wasn't a total flop.
If you do see the film, make sure you hang out during the credits. There's at least one historical moment in there.
I give it a 7/10.

Update: David thinks I'm full of crap and wouldn't know a good movie if it up and bit me. Well, he didn't quite say that, but check out the comments - he really liked the movie and explained why.
Update: My brother David had a different perspective on this, and really liked the movie. Check out the comments to see why.
Ben,
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? I thought the movie was great. I thought they could have totally screwed it up by trying to include every character and too many story lines. Instead, I thought it was well balanced and left me laughing for almost the entire movie.
Also ben, if you remember the "classics" (of which i would say are seasons 4-7), you had to watch the episodes at least twice to pickup all the jokes and hidden messages in each scene. There were definetly things going on the in the background of the movie which need a second viewing.
Anyway, i gave it a 9, which was lower than the newspaper here which gave it a 10. I thought it had everything a simpson's fan would want, but didn't throw in so many inside jokes that a newbie couldn't get it.
No, I'm not kidding.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you have to say - I think it was a descent movie.
But the TV shown, when it was really good, was far more than a good TV show. It showed just how hilarious TV could be.
You make a good point about it being balanced and a good storyline. They passed up a lot of chances to just show every character doing their stereotypical thing - which I give them a lot of credit for.
But still - the episode about Bart and Lisa being taken in by the Flanders' was way funnier than the storyline of the movie (Dad - you took a baptismal for me!).
Ben,
ReplyDeletenot sure you took my comments right. This is why i hate text vs. voice. I meant to offense, and i probably could have stated my points in a more diplomatic tone. I also think you you have great taste in commedies. If i remember correctly you love both When Harry Met Sally and Ace Venture Pet detective, displaying not only the quality of movies (I love them both), but also the range you have.
I would also say that i loved the show. But remember that the lines of the show are the memorable part (i cracked up just reading your line from "joining the flanders"), and being syndicated is the reason i am able to pull all those great lines out of my a--. Also, even as big a fan as i am, i will admit the show even missed a few times, although can you blame them after 400 episodes with having a few misses?
Well maybe i'll leave it at this. As comedies go it was no big labowski, PCU, or Van Wilder, but it was also no Police Acadamy or She's all that (if you need me to explain which are the good movies and the bad movies on this list, then we just can't watch movies together).
Anyway,
still love the blog and your views on everything so keep it up.
love,
your little brother
Dave -
ReplyDeleteI'm actually the one who owes you an apology.
I totally agree with your comments. I think I just had higher expectations than you did for the movie.
Also, in my mind, the show's quality has definitely dipped these last few years. Which is another reason why it's impressive that the movie was as good as it was.
I shouldn't have been so melodramatic with my comments, and you might have caught on to the fact that I really appreciated your comments. Thanks and keep them up.
You're never going to offend me on this blog. Promise.
If you do, I'll just delete the comment :-).
I finally saw it, last night. I loved it! I look forward to watching it several more times, after the DVD comes out.
ReplyDeleteWe wondered whether it was okay to bring our 4-year-old to it, and we decided against it, because of the PG-13 rating. After seeing it, I'm still not sure. I think that if they left out about 5 little things, it could have gotten a PG rating. But, it was cool that they were able to do a few things that they've never been able to get away with on TV. :)
Thanks for the tip about staying for the credits, btw. Boy, they lasted forever, though. It's incredible how many people were involved in making that movie! I liked how they showed the voice actors from at least 2 perspectives, in the credits. Showing the actor's name, along with pictures and names of all of the characters that they did, was pretty neat.
Anyways, I've been a Simpsons fan for about 19 years, and I was not disappointed. Now I'm looking forward to the sequel!
