The Bomber by Liza Marklund was supposed to be a nice little novel about some pathalogical bomber. Ya know, something to make the commute easier to my new job. Though I have been plesantly surprised as the book so far (on side 9) hasn't been so much about a bomber - but about life in a daily paper.
It's been fun watching the story unfold through the eyes of the crime-desk editor. The author does a good job of letting the story unfold at a decent pace - where the main character figures out stuff when she should.
At first I assumed that the book took place in England, as the narrartor had a kinda English accent. But I realized that none of the place names sounded familiar - and everybody was driving a Volvo. Then it hit me - this is taking place in Sweden. This helps to explain the funky names - Olf Olfeson, or Anika, and why day care seems to be brought up so often. There were also references to what a small country the main character lives in.
So now I have this mental model of Sweden. The people are nice, their news agencies hard working, and they like to cuss a lot. Oh, and it's cold there.
So far I give the book and 8/10 for lisenability as it's been fun and the story works for me.
